"We are not behind mountains of files"
Training as a tax clerk at Tomik + Partner:

There are many options when choosing a career. And many professions may seem boring and dusty at first glance. But a second look is often worth it.

This is also the case with the profession of tax clerk. We spoke to our trainees Laura Heisig and Michael Fortmann, partners and training managers at Tomik + Partner and learned interesting things.

Dear Laura, a year abroad, travel blogger, fashion influencer, social media manager, the list of professions that are currently very popular with young people is long. Young people often find it difficult to choose the right path for them. And yes, we also know that training as a tax clerk is not the first priority in the choice of occupation. We find it wrong. What do you mean?

Yes, absolutely wrongly, I can say after six months in training.

But I was also interested in other professions, but then I became curious and did an internship at Tomik + Partner. There are many interesting tasks and possibilities. That's why I found the job very exciting and applied. It's a great job, I haven't regretted it.

What were the reasons that convinced you?

The training is one of the best trainings in Germany and is very demanding and versatile. I learn a lot about companies and the economy and have interesting contacts with different clients.

As a tax clerk, I can later work in many industries, have many training opportunities and am always in demand, because taxes will always exist and the tax laws are becoming more and more complex. There are experts who need to keep track.

What should you bring when choosing a profession?

A good understanding of the numbers is important, even if you don't have to calculate all day, as many imagine.

And a basic understanding of the economy cannot hurt either. For example.B I did my Abitur at the business school because I knew that I wanted to learn a commercial profession. So I already bring business knowledge, which now helps me to think quickly into the topics.

There are many law firms, why did you choose Tomik + Partner?

It was important to me that the firm is in a modern position and that there is a nice, young team. That's what I found at Tomik + Partner.

Colleagues are all open and helpful. I was involved in the team from the very beginning, have been assigned tasks that I can work on independently and thus assume a certain responsibility from the very beginning. I can ask my questions at any time.

I also think it's great that we do almost everything digitally here. We are not sitting behind huge piles of files, as some might imagine. All documents are digital and the data exchange with clients is completely paperless.

I was also convinced that Tomik + Partner is one of the largest law firms in the region and that we have very versatile clients. I find it very interesting to support clients as part of the team.

What does a normal working day look like for you?

I get a coffee, check my mails. Then I will vote with my colleague on what is to be said today. Then I book, or let her explain certain tasks and procedures. On Mondays and Wednesdays I have vocational school at rudolf Rempel vocational college in Bielefeld. At the moment, the lessons are running online. That's ok, but it's nicer to see my classmates live.

It all sounds great to Laura, but hand on your heart: Is there something you don't like so much?

Sure, i think there is in every profession. These are a few trainee tasks that I have to motivate myself to do. That is simply part of it. All in all, however, the positives prevail and I am delighted to have taken this path.

How do you imagine your future?

I am only in my first year of training and therefore I am thinking primarily of completing my training well. After that, I want to work in my profession. I can also well imagine a degree. This works very well as a dual study programme. In our law firm there are 5 colleagues who are still studying part-time after their training. This can be combined super and Tomik + Partner supports this very well.

For me, training is a good start to working with many opportunities for further education. Let's see what's next.

Thank you Laura.
We wish you every success and continue to enjoy your training at Tomik + Partner

Mr Fortmann, your trainees are very satisfied with their training at Tomik + Partner. There will surely be more to come up with the idea of applying to you.

What are your requirements for your trainees?

I am very pleased that Mrs Heisig likes it so much. Since 1980, our firm has been training every year with good success.

And we are always very happy about applications.

It is important for us that we have young people who have a fundamental interest in economic and tax issues and a good understanding of the numbers. Then it is a WIN-WIN situation for us and for the trainees. Because requirements and interests then "match" very well.

Since the training is one of the most demanding in Germany, we require a good secondary school leaving certificate, the completion of the Higher Commercial School or The Abitur. She would also be happy to take an economic diploma, just as Mrs. Heisig completed here at the Halle Vocational College.

What is your offer to your trainees?

Just as we have the highest quality standards for our client support and our employee management. For us, apprentices are not simply cheap workers, but young professionals who need to be promoted right from the start.

The trainees are therefore given the best possible support and working conditions, so that they can quickly enter their profession and achieve a successful degree.

In order to achieve this, our training is well structured and the trainees work in the team right from the start.

You will receive professional support for all questions, including topics of vocational school.

We have a lot of experience in the field of training and offer modern workplaces.

If successful, the chances of taking over in our law firm are very good and there are also numerous prospects for further training.

A friendly team and many add-ons like coffee and free lunch est on top.

We think this is a very fair offer for the start of your professional life!

Do you have the opportunity to get a taste of your profession?

Yes, this can be done as part of an internship. We have had very good experiences with this and many interns have also become an apprentice and later a tax specialist at Tomik + Partner. We are always happy about excited and interested interns who want to try their way into our day-to-day practice.

What are the prospects for young people when they choose the profession?

As a tax clerk, you have many great prospects for the future. In this way, you can later become a tax specialist, study business administration or become a tax consultant. For very ambitious young people, this is also possible at the same time.

Tax clerks are needed at all times and everywhere and therefore always find a job. Be it in a law firm or in the free economy.

These are perspectives that do not exist in many training occupations.

Thank you Mr. Fortmann for the insights into the training at Tomik + Partner. We wish you continued success in the training of young people!
