With Tomik + Partner "Master Tax Law and Tax Administration (LL.M.)".

There are many career and entry opportunities in the law firm Tomik + Partner. A particularly popular option for young people who want to develop is dual studies. A total of five employees at Tomik + Partner study part-time. With one of them, we have completed the highly recognized Master's degree programme in our industry in Tax Law and Tax Administration (LL.M.). Erkan Karaman is in the 4th semester and lets us participate in his decision and his daily study and professional life.

Mr Karaman, there are many courses of study, why did you choose it?

After my Bachelor of Laws with a focus on tax law at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, it quickly became clear to me that I would like to further qualify in this area. That's why I qualified for the dual Master's degree in Tax Law and Tax Administration (LL.M.) at the TH Köln.

Within 2.5 years, I have received the academic degree of the "Master of Laws" (LL.M.) and prepare me for the tax consultant exam at the same time. And all this without additional time or additional costs. That convinced me.

I am currently in the 4th semester, so I'm virtually on the home straight for the Master's exam and the tax consultant exam. The next few months will be very intensive, but it is worth it.

How is the degree programme structured, what are the entry requirements and what is the importance of graduation in our industry?

It is a fully integrated study concept. This means that the content relevant for the tax consultant examination is optimally integrated into the module teaching at the TH in terms of time and content. Therefore, no extra preparatory courses need to be attended.

Admission requirements for this course of study are either a university degree with an economic or tax/legal component, a first state examination in law or a university degree of any subject and one and a half years of professional experience with a professional connection.

I have registered for this at the TH Köln, which offers the course of study in cooperation with Dr. Bannas GmbH. But there are also several other providers.

The course of study is still relatively young. It was first offered in Munich nine years ago.

However, it is now one of the highest degrees that can be achieved in our industry and is internationally recognised.

In addition to your studies, you also work as an assistant at the law firm Tomik + Partner. That sounds very ambitious. How well do studies and work work side by side?

I work in the firm from Monday to Wednesday and am entrusted with a wide range of tax matters in practice, which complements my theory very well. Thursdays and Fridays are my lecture days. These are currently taking place online. Otherwise I always go to Cologne to the TH. It's a lot of driving, but I really like seeing the fellow students, exchanging ideas and learning together. I like to take the rides on me. I often also stayed in Cologne.

Of course, it is not always easy to reconcile study and work. But I knew beforehand what was coming and i made a conscious decision to do so. Education is very important to me and I want to achieve as much as possible in the shortest possible time. That's what I like to do.

At the same time, I can also finance my life and already get a lot of professional practice. It doesn't get any better for me.

Why did you choose to join to the law firm Tomik + Partner?

It helps a lot with dual studies to have an employer who supports you in the best possible way – also financially – and gives you the necessary freedom to learn and give lectures. I get all that here.

After my bachelor's degree, I have already applied here with the project to start the dual studies. In contrast to many other law firms, the partners here are very open-minded when it comes to enabling employees to continue their education and studies. I think that is very good.

When I have my time at university, I do not need to go to the office and Am not confronted with questions or e-mails from everyday work. This allows me to concentrate fully on my work during my working days and on my studies during my studies.

It is also important to me that I get an insight into many areas of the law firm and that I can deal with many exciting technical questions in practice. As a result, I gain a wide range of knowledge and can be used in many ways later.

Why do you think Tomik + Partner is so committed to the dual study and further education of his team?

The importance and responsibility of employees in the taxes and auditing sectors has grown steadily in recent years. The increasingly complex tax laws require enormous expertise. In view of the high quality standards of the law firm, it is very important to the partners at Tomik + Partner that the clients are looked after by a highly qualified team. They like to invest in that.

What would you say to other students if you chose dual studies?

It's worth it. Bring the necessary bit of ambition and discipline and you have two high degrees in no time and can get off to a career.

Apply to Tomik + Partner. You will not regret it. We are a digitally very well-positioned law firm, with versatile medium-sized clients and a friendly team.

We look forward to seeing you!

Thank you Mr. Karaman for taking a look at your everyday life and your studies. We wish you continued success and are already keeping our fingers crossed for your Master's and exams!
